Strip Timber Flooring on Plywood

For decades, strip timber floors have been renowned as the all-purpose flooring for fitting into any household condition. As a result, it’s arguably considered one of the ideal floorings for new houses. Likewise, it’s also considered a perfect replacement during floor renovations.

What are the Requirements for Plywood Subfloors?

Before timber floor installation, it’s important to check the plywood subfloors. This valuation will greatly determine the fixing recommendation appropriate for the plywood. As some would say, the key to getting the best result is to make sure your subfloor is readily prepared before laying your timber floor.

As such, here are the things you should know about:

  • Plywood should be 12mm or 15mm thick.
  • The bond should be type A.
  • The subfloor should be structural grade.
  • If the plywood thickness is 12mm, there should be a great consideration in the evenness of the concrete slab.
  • 12mm plywood would also require a full trowel bed of adhesive and moisture vapour retarding barrier.

It is important to determine the right thickness requirement for your subfloors to get optimum insulation.

Types of Timber Flooring for Plywood Subfloors

When strip timber floors are fixed over a plywood subfloor, you can choose between overlay flooring or structural flooring.

  • Overlay
If you want a clean and fast installation, overlay flooring is your best option. Moreover, because it’s more convenient, it’s also cheap while providing durability.
The only thing you need to secure is the plywood. This flooring will only work if the bedrock is concrete.
  • Structural
Unlike the overlay, the subfloor has a hardwood core. Wood density is the difference between the two.
Structural flooring also provides ultimate stability, which results in smooth flooring. In addition, unlike overlay, it doesn’t allow the secretion of off-gassing elements from the glue or adhesives, which are harmful formaldehydes that can cause sickness.

Most Used Floor Styles for Strip Timber Flooring

Common timber strip flooring designs are as follows:

  • Classical Coffee Colour
This design is the most common and traditional style for most customers. As such, it’s particularly flexible when it comes to overall household designs.
Because of its dark richness, it can fit into any enhanced interior decoration. Moreover, it will never get outdated because its real classical mode is a timeless relic.
  • Modern Grey Colour
This style is for consumers who want to extend the formality even to the flooring. What works well for this design is that it can always lean back to the traditional style.
However, this one is the usual preference for office-like rooms to set a formal atmosphere tone.
  • Sunkissed Beach-look Light Airy Colour
Thematically, it’s a floor simulation for Paradise Island. This style is particularly popular because some customers like the design for relaxation purposes.
Some treat it as beneficial because the design moves away from a dark and gloomy environment. This one could be right up your alley, especially if you’re stressed, anxious, or depressed.

Additional Notes

The strip timber floor application approach may vary because installers need to consider local conditions.

  • It means that installers need to make a holistic assessment of different factors, such as:
    – technical conditions
    – site conditions
    – architectural conditions
    – environmental conditions
The zigzag pattern is the top application in strip timber flooring of 6 to 10 mm adhesive beads.
  • The fixing length of 22 mm is usually preferred for overlay flooring up to 15mm thick.
  • Strip timber flooring only requires simple maintenance. However, occasional refinishing is necessary if you want to maintain it for centuries.
  • This type of flooring also carries a higher price tag than common flooring like tiles. Nevertheless, its durability makes it a good investment for its evident cost-efficiency.
  • The best wood sources are oak, cherry, and walnut.
